Medieval Theatre

14/09/2024

This is the period between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, starting the Renaissance.

This is over a thousand year period. The themes of the plays were almost always religious, some of the most popular types of plays were; English cycle dramas, Mystery plays, and Morality plays, the most famous being 'Everyman', it's original writer is unknown, but there are versions that have been adapted by people such as Carol Ann Duffy in modern times. Due to very low levels of reading and writing abilities, the plays were normally only spoken without much script used, this then resulted in many, if not most of the earlier plays to be lost over time. However later on in the medieval era, larger numbers of plays survived due to the increase in education.
